6 Tips for Summer Skincare

June 22, 2018

As the sun continues to shine bright and you’re busy making summer vacation plans, it’s time to start thinking about the ways you should adjust your skincare routine and why. Here are some great summer skin care tips to help you prevent sun damage, uneven skin, redness and more.

#1 Exfoliate – a little less!

Exfoliation removes dead, dull skin to prevent clogging and improve the hydration, but during warmer months, you should really only exfoliate once a week. And if you plan to be outside having fun in the sun for prolonged periods of time, you should hold off from any exfoliation altogether. However, when you do exfoliate, it’s best to do it in the mornings prior to applying sunscreen – which you always want to do (it’s recommended by the FDA!).

#2 Hydrate your skin!

This is the perfect season to step up the hydration of your skin. Try an intensive mask, or a toner, which will also offer a refreshing moisturizing prep. Not getting enough? We think it’s a great idea to keep a revitalizing toner spritz at your desk, in the car, at the gym, on the plane! Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

#3 Hydrate your body!

Hot temperatures and spending more time playing outside can easily lead to serious hydration, which can make you feel dizzy and even give you a headache! Take are of your body from the inside out by drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day. It will help maintain moisture in the body and skin, and keep you glowing!

#4 Don’t Forget The Sunscreen!

Try applying sunscreen every night for a week or two before a big beach vacation. This allows the sunscreen to build up and make your skin less likely to burn.

And, once you’re at the beach, it’s not enough to just apply sunscreen – you really need to make sure you’re applying enough and you’re applying frequently – every two hours to be safe!

#5 Prevent Breakouts!

Keep an eye out for ‘oil-free’ suncreens, and don’t forget that ‘sheer’ doesn’t always mean they are oil-free too. Stick with your skincare routine, and pick sun protection that’s best for your skin.

#6 Take Care of Your Sunburn

If you forgot sunscreen, or simply didn’t apply enough, you don’t have to suffer with a sunburn. Try some soothing botanicals or cooling gels to help reduce redness and help prevent peeling. You forgot the sunscreen, didn’t apply enough, or got caught in a sunny spell. As soon as you see a pink glow on your skin apply cooling gels generously and consider taking ibuprofen to stop any swelling.

And, last, but not least, ALWAYS be safe by making sure to visit your dermatologist yearly to keep an eye on any changes in your skin that you can’t see on your own.
